The history of the Titanic is one of the most compelling stories about the achievements that human beings has ever made. However, it is also considered one of the most tragic tales of disaster that mankind has ever experienced. When the RMS Titanic sank in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean it totally horrified its passengers and completely stunned the world.
The ship was touted to be an unsinkable ocean liner that would never go to a watery grave. The ship’s builders were wrong. On April 14, 1912 the liner struck an iceberg that tore a gash in its side. By 2 a.m. April 15 the ship had faded into history. Now, let us recount the tale of the RMS Titanic, its people and its legacy.
On April 11, 1912 the RMS Titanic prepared for its maiden voyage. The ship took between 2 and 3 years to build and a construction force of 3,000 men were used to complete the job. The workers on this ship were rotated in continuous shifts until the job was complete. Billionaire tycoon J.P. Morgan was the owner of this ship and it was designed by Thomas Andrews.
When the RMS Titanic was ready to leave port it had 900 crewmen and 2,435 passengers. The ship held over 3,000 people. The ship pulled out of port at Southampton, England. It was a grand event that many people in the region attended. There were large crowds and a huge celebration. People everywhere were thrilled about the departure of the Titanic.
When the ship left port the onboard passengers enjoyed the luxury and the refreshing atmosphere that the Titanic had to offer. Some of the world’s richest people were taking the cruise from England to the states. Poor people were on the ship as well. Even they enjoyed being a part of this historical journey as well.
For a few days, it seemed as if everything was okay and that the ship would make it to its final destination. Then, the unthinkable happened. The Titanic was passing through the icy and frigid waters of the North Atlantic. These waters were cold enough to have icebergs. When the ship was trying to navigate through these icebergs it struck the side of one ripping its side. Water entered into the vessel and the rest as they say is history.
Many people all over the world were outraged by the loss of life that took place on the Titanic. Maritime laws, evacuation processes and ship building procedures were significantly altered because of this event. People everywhere lost confidence in the shipping industry. If a great ship like the Titanic was able to sink underwater, then what chance would lesser cruise liner vessels have of staying afloat?
Eventually, the problems that stemmed from the Titanic were resolved. People regained their confidence and started to use ocean liners once again. The legacy of the Titanic continued to live on. Each generation had been taught about it so they too would not make the same mistake. People everywhere salute the RMS Titanic and all that it stands for.
